Open Source CFML Engine - Final Version Released

After more than a year of development, Railo Technologies today released the final version of Railo 3.1, a high performance, free, open source CFML engine, and a JBoss.org project. Railo allows anyone to write and run CFML pages on any JEE server or servlet container with no licensing fees. This makes it much easier for any developer to take advantage of CFML as an easy to use replacement for JSP's for the view and as an alternative dynamic scripting language on the JVM for other parts of their application that need to be developed quickly but still run on any Java servlet container/JEE server. As a JBoss project, Railo 3.1 is being released under the LGPL v2 open source license.

"We are extremely happy that we are finally able to deliver Railo as an open source project. I would like to thank all the people that helped to build this remarkable release and I would also like to thank our partner JBoss who provided help whenever we needed it." said Gert Franz CEO of Railo Technologies.

Sean Corfield, chair of the CFML Advisory committee said: "I am excited to see another open source engine providing more choice for developers wishing to use CFML and I'm pleased to hear of Railo's commitment to following the CFML 2009 specification to ensure interoperability between CFML engines."

Mark Drew CEO of Railo UK said "I'm excited to be involved with this release. I have been involved with many open source projects within the CFML community and now it is great to have an entire open source CFML engine that allows us to build the developer base, cut down on the barriers to entry for new potential CFML developers, and give all CFML developers an engine they can customize to meet their specific needs".

Peter Bell, who heads up Railo operations in the US said "Now that we have a final open source release, we can focus on adding new features based on community feedback. I'm particularly happy to see the active community that has grown up around the busy Railo mailing list and all the great work that Todd Rafferty - the volunteer community manager - is doing to support the adoption of the Railo engine.

"I confessed that I haven't been involved in open source projects as much in the past," commented Todd Rafferty, Volunteer Community Manager, "When I first looked into Railo 3.0, I was very much out of my comfort zone and immediately fascinated with Railo. When I heard Railo 3.1 was being open sourced and part of JBoss, I thought that this not only be a great opportunity for me to learn from an awesome team, but it would be a chance to put back into the CFML community what the community has given me for over 10 years. I'm looking forward to spreading the word throughout the community that there is a viable alternative, recruit new developers and fill in any necessary gaps in Railo as possible."
